Cleaning Around a Temporary Crown
- Brush gently with a soft manual toothbrush and avoid excessive pressure.
- If your dentist says flossing is appropriate, slide floss down and pull it out through the side rather than lifting it upward.
- Use a warm saltwater or prescribed rinse as directed.
Eating and Sensitivity
- Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can dislodge or break the temporary crown.
- Choose softer foods and chew on the opposite side when possible.
- Avoid extreme temperatures if the tooth is sensitive.
- Call for persistent or increasing pain, swelling, sensitivity, or symptoms that interrupt sleep.
If the Temporary Crown Feels Loose or Comes Off
Contact the office promptly so the crown can be checked and recemented. If you are unable to reach a dentist, follow only the temporary replacement directions your dental team has already provided; do not use household glue. Be especially careful while flossing around the crown.
Keep the scheduled appointment for your permanent crown. At that visit, the temporary will be removed and the final crown will be checked and adjusted for fit, comfort, and bite.
Call Us If
- The temporary crown is loose, broken, or comes off.
- Your bite feels high or you cannot chew comfortably.
- Pain, swelling, or sensitivity is persistent or increasing.
