Laughing gas is inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose. You breathe normally while a carefully controlled blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen helps you feel calmer. You remain awake and able to communicate throughout the visit.
Some patients describe warmth, lightness, or mild tingling. The level can be adjusted while you breathe through the mask. When treatment ends, you receive oxygen, and the effects usually fade much faster than oral or IV sedation.
Local anesthetic is still used when a treatment area needs to be numb. Laughing gas supports relaxation but does not replace pain control.

Breathing Through Your Nose
Because the gas comes through a nose mask, it only works if you can breathe through your nose comfortably. A bad cold, sinus congestion, or severe allergies on the day of your visit may mean rescheduling or choosing a different comfort option. Laughing gas is generally avoided during pregnancy, especially the first trimester, and certain lung conditions or a recent eye surgery can also rule it out. Please tell us so we can plan around it.
Combining It With Other Sedation
Laughing gas can be layered with oral sedation to smooth the start of a visit, but only when our team plans it that way. Never take an extra sedative, sleep aid, or alcohol on your own before an appointment where laughing gas is planned, since the combination can suppress breathing. If you are having IV sedation, nitrous oxide is generally not needed in addition.
The Oxygen Flush
When treatment is finished, the nitrous oxide is turned off and you breathe pure oxygen through the mask for a few minutes. This clears the gas from your system and prevents the lightheadedness that can happen when it wears off on room air. Most patients feel like themselves within minutes.
